1 State Treasurer Race to Win

The top initiatives

Every government office has issues, but the Treasurer’s office is unique in that it does little in the way of setting policy. How your tax dollars are spent is set by the State’s legislature. Even our investment policy is heavily regulated by state constitutional and statutory guidelines. That being said, here are the issues I will influence as State Treasurer:

PERA

Currently, the State’s Public Employee Retirement Fund (PERA) maintains a $32 billion unfunded liability. The solution will be neither easy nor painless, requiring tough political choices. As the only elected official serving on PERA’s board, the State Treasurer does wield some influence, and I will work closely with all parties to find a solution.

Investments

For anyone worried about whether the Treasurer’s office is making risky bets with your tax dollars, I invite them to review our low-risk, low-yield investment portfolio on the State website. The best way to describe the Treasurer’s  investment strategy would be dreadfully cautious.

Unclaimed Property

Believe it or not, this program has been the most controversial in during my 11 years as CFO. Basically, we manage the state’s Lost and Found box. The most common criticism is that the process to reclaim lost money, property, etc., is that it takes too long. Well, all I can say to that is we make sure the right people get the right stuff, and that takes some time.

What does the Treasurer do?!

How your tax dollars are spent is determined by the legislature. The treasurer ensures budgeted money is where it needs to be, when it needs to be there.

Every Little Bit Helps

I may not know much about running a political campaign, but I do know it is a costly and time-consuming endeavor. We’ll need all the help we can get. Whether you would like to donate money or time, every cent and every minute helps. I want to put my career in business and finance, as well as the last 11 years as State CFO, to work for you. In order to do that, we plan to build a community of volunteers to help organize and work events, educate voters on what the Treasurer does, get people out to vote, and make sure we have the human and financial resources we need to run a solid campaign. Let’s all work together on this. Quin To Win!
